Semester context

This is what the planner reads every morning. Edit it as the semester moves — when the systematic review date finally lands, put it here and every future plan knows.

# Yash — Semester 2, 2026

Final year, double degree: Mechanical/Mechatronic Engineering + Biomedical Science.
**Overloaded: 30 credit points against a standard 24. No off-ramp — this is triage, not reduction.**
Lives Williams Landing, campus is Clayton. Round trip ~2.5 hrs; commute cost is the dominant
constraint on how the week is shaped. Joining Kinematics (father's building services consultancy)
as a graduate after graduation.

Semester: Mon 27 Jul -> Fri 23 Oct. Mid-sem break 21-25 Sep. SWOT vac from 26 Oct. Exams 2-18 Nov.

## The four units

**BMS3052** — Biomedical Basis and Epidemiology of Human Disease. 12 pts (double unit), capstone,
stated minimum 24 hrs/week. 80% assessed in-semester; final exam only 20%.
- Case Study 1 ~14%, Fri 21 Aug 3-4pm, invigilated.
- Case Study 2 ~14%, Fri 18 Sep 3-4pm, invigilated. 18 MCQ + 1 short answer. ONE attempt,
40 minutes once started. No 2-day extension.
- Research Translation Part A (report), Wed 9 Sep 11:55pm. ONE submission only — work left as
  Draft is NOT marked.
- Research Translation Part B (campaign + live pitch), Wed 7 Oct. Slides must be emailed to the
  tutor BEFORE class.
- Personal & Professional Development ~2%, Fri 2 Oct.
- Peer evaluation (FeedbackFruits), Fri 23 Oct. Not completing it = 0 for that part. No extension.
- Systematic review 30% — DUE DATE STILL UNKNOWN. Chase Kelly. Drip 2 hrs every Sunday from W2.
- Final exam 20%, exam period.

**MEC4407** — Mechanical Design 3. 6 pts, min 12 hrs/week. Team project: quick-release phone
mount for bike/motorbike handlebars. Chief examiner Scott Wordley.
- Weekly standup attendance 10% (1% each, Wednesday nights after studio).
- ANSYS discipline training 10% (2% each, end of weeks 2,3,4,5,7). ALL FIVE SETS ARE ALREADY
RELEASED — bankable early, and transferable from the Abaqus work on the FYP.
- Concept Report 20% x PAF1, Fri 28 Aug. Concept Presentation 5%, Wed 2 Sep.
- **Peer Assessment #1 (ITP Metrics survey), Fri 4 Sep — PAF ranges 0.0-1.1 and not completing it
gives PAF = 0, which zeroes the ENTIRE proposal stage. ~5 minutes guarding 25% of the unit.
Highest consequence-per-minute item of the semester.**
- Final Report 50% x PAF2, Fri 16 Oct (date disputed with the schedule spreadsheet — assume the
earlier date). Final Presentation 5%, Wed 21 Oct — pod attendance compulsory, absence = 0.
- **Peer Assessment #2, Fri 23 Oct — same PAF = 0 risk, this time over 55% of the unit.**
- Fuse1 Nylon print submissions 1% each, W7 and W9.
- No extensions or special consideration on the major reports or weekly activities.
- Friday deadlines carry an automatic 2-day extension to Monday 9am.
- Work DIRECTLY in the Team Google Drive docs in real time — staff analyse revision history to
verify individual contribution. Offline work uploaded at the end doesn't count as evidence.

**MMA2005** — Modelling and Control. 6 pts, ~12 hrs/week, flipped. Best marks-per-hour of the four.
- In-class Test 1 25%, Thu 20 Aug, during the 4-6pm practical.
- In-class Test 2 25%, Thu 17 Sep, during the 4-6pm practical.
- Final assessment 50%, exam period.
- **Notes portfolio — pass/fail hurdle, date TBA in the second half of semester. Failing it caps
the unit at 45 and excludes supplementary assessment.**
- Practicals are on campus only and not recorded. Workshops are recorded and flexible.
- A Friday 10am practical exists and can be used as a drop-in for extra help.

**ENG4702** — Final Year Project B. 6 pts, ~12 hrs/week. Cardiac stent FEA: parametric Abaqus
study of M3-3 / M3-14 / M3-16 magnesium alloys across CCS/OCS square and rectangular geometries.
Targets: recoil <8%, dogboning <1.3, foreshortening <10%. Teammates Daniel Deguara, Soumil Raikar.
- Final paper, Mon 19 Oct — HURDLE.
- Presentation submission, Fri 23 Oct — HURDLE.
- FYP conference, week 14 (first week of exams), 10-min talk + 5-min Q&A.
- Run this unit efficiently, not thoroughly. Leverage the ENG4701 progress report. Don't gold-plate.

## Weekly rhythm

- **Mon** — MEC4407 workshop 9-10 online from home, drive in, BMS3052 tutorial 12-2, gym 2:30-4.
- **Tue** — Fully online. MMA2005 workshop 8-10, then PROTECTED DEEP WORK 10:30-4. No commute.
This is the best block of the week and the deadline for anything needed by a Friday assessment.
- **Wed** — Anchor campus day. MEC4407 studio 10-12, BMS3052 tutorial 12-1:30, team work 2-3,
  gym 3:30-5.
- **Thu** — FYP supervisor meeting 11-12 online, drive in, FYP lab 1:30-3:45, MMA2005 practical 4-6.
- **Fri** — BMS3052 seminar 3-4, gym 4:15-5:45.
- **Sat** — Gym 8-9:30. Otherwise free/buffer.
- **Sun** — Gym 8-9:30, systematic review 10-12, Airbnb admin 6-7, planning check-in 7pm.

## Non-uni commitments

- **Gym** — target ~8 hrs/week across 5 sessions, stacked onto days already on campus. Has an
existing 8-week structured plan built from Hevy data. Protect it; it is not the flex item.
- **Airbnb** — 2 bed 1 bath, Melbourne CBD (Lighthouse Melbourne). Cleaning is outsourced.
Remaining load is messaging, pricing and reviews only, boxed to 1 hr/week on Sunday.
- **Personal projects** — 5-10 hrs/week, self-directed. **This is the only genuinely elastic
commitment and the first thing to compress in a crunch week.**

## Protected dates

- Sat 3 - Sun 4 Oct: festival. No study scheduled.

## The three structural traps

1. **Two double-invigilation weeks.** Week 4: MMA2005 Test 1 (25%) Thu 20 Aug then BMS3052 Case
Study 1 Fri 21 Aug. Week 8: Test 2 (25%) Thu 17 Sep then Case Study 2 Fri 18 Sep. ~39% of two
units inside 24 hours, twice. The Thursday evening normally used to cram for Friday IS the test.
**Rule: all BMS3052 case study prep must be finished by the Tuesday.**
2. **Weeks 11-12 are the wall.** Final report 50% Fri 16 Oct -> FYP paper (hurdle) Mon 19 Oct ->
MEC4407 presentation Wed 21 Oct -> triple deadline Fri 23 Oct. Four majors in five days.
**Mitigation: draft the ENG4702 paper during the mid-semester break (22-24 Sep).** It's an
editing job on the ENG4701 report, not new research. This single decision makes W12 survivable.
3. **The exam period is light.** The pain is Weeks 4-12. Spend energy in-semester accordingly.

## Triage priority when the day is over-full

1. Anything with a PAF gate or a hurdle (5 minutes, catastrophic downside).
2. MMA2005 — best marks-per-hour, and the notes portfolio hurdle can cap the unit at 45.
3. MEC4407 final report — 50% of a unit, no extensions, no special consideration.
4. BMS3052 systematic review — drip it, never cram it. It is the item most likely to eat the semester.
5. ENG4702 — efficient, not thorough.
6. Personal projects — compress first.

## Open questions to chase

1. BMS3052 systematic review due date + is there an oral component? Ask Kelly. Highest-value question.
2. MEC4407 final report: Fri 16 Oct or Week 12 Thursday? Ask Scott Wordley.
3. ENG4702 S2 2026 dates — the uploaded overview was the S1 version.
4. MMA2005 notes portfolio due date and format.
5. Is the Friday BMS3052 seminar recorded in non-assessment weeks? If yes, most Fridays free up.
